The Taiwanese are bracing for the possibility that China will use military force to attempt to assert control over their island.

Russia launched Tuesday what it called its largest ever military drills, with hundreds of thousands of troops taking part along with Chinese soldiers in a show of force NATO condemned as a rehearsal for “large-scale conflict.”

President Vladimir Putin is expected to attend the games after hosting an economic forum in Russia’s far eastern city Vladivostok where his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping is one of the prominent guests.

The week-long war games dubbed “Vostok-2018″(East-2018) “have kicked off” in far eastern Russia, the defence ministry said. Continue reading

A series of leaked internal documents reveal that China’s military reforms are aimed at allowing Beijing to “manage a crisis, contain a conflict, win a war” and overtake the United States in military strength, according to the Express.

The leaked documents were published by the Central Military Commission in February for the purpose of spreading President Xi Jinping’s “thought on strengthening the armed forces”.

If the reforms go ahead, they will lead to heightened tensions with China’s neighbouring countries, including Japan, in the East and South China Seas and the US. –Express Continue reading

China’s Rapid Military Modernization Is “Remarkable,” Set To Challenge West On Several Fronts

Gone are the days of China catching up and now they are on par or ahead of world leaders in terms of military technology.

China already being at parity was noted in several posts over the years, including these:

China is opening a new quantum research supercenter

Chinese weapons reaching ‘near-parity’ with West: study

Chinese Defense Ministry Confirms Hypersonic Missile Test

China’s rapid military modernization is “remarkable,” and is no longer merely “catching up” with the West, reports the International Institute for Strategic Studies in their annual report on global military capabilities.

China’s emerging weapons developments and broader defence-technological progress mean that it has become a global defence innovator says Dr. John Chipman, Director-General and Chief Executive of the London-based think tank.  Continue reading

Russia: Who Stole What For North Korea

Over the weekend Russia made a point of revealing another of their post-Cold War EW (electronic warfare) aircraft. This one is called the Il-22PP and described as an airborne electronic jammer that can block all manner of signals but particularly the digital ones (like Link 16) favored by Western warplanes. The Il-22PP was also described as being able to protect itself from anti-radiation missiles, like the American AGM-88. Since late 2015 Russia has revealed (to the public) the existence of other post-Cold War electronic warfare aircraft by using them in Syria or over Ukraine. Not so the Il-22PP, at least not yet. On April 11, 2016, the pro-Kremlin media outlet Pravda.ru published an interview with Anatoly Kvochur, a distinguished Russian test pilot, who started his career in the Soviet forces and is currently deputy chief of the Gromov Flight Research Institute at Zhukovsky airbase. In the interview, Kvochur states that Russia has developed successful fifth-generation fighter aircraft – as opposed to the U.S., whose F-22 and F-35 fifth-generation fighter jets should, he claims, be considered a “failure.”[1] He also asserts that Russia’s “military doctrine is purely defensive,” whereas U.S. military doctrine is “a doctrine of global domination.”

On March 2, 2016, Russian Aerospace Forces commander Viktor Bondarev announced that Russia’s sixth-generation fighter is being developed in both manned and unmanned versions.[2]

The following are excerpts from Kvochur’s interview with Pravda.ru:[3] Continue reading

Iran to Russia: Take $14bn and build us a modern army

Iran’s Defense Minister Gen. Hossein Dehghan arrived in Moscow this week at the head of a large military delegation and laid before President Vladimir Putin and his Defense Minister Gen. Sergei Shoigu a $14 billion check. Now, make our Revolutionary Guards Corps and regular forces into an up-to-the-minute war machine, he said.

The plan to make over and upgrade Iran’s military was first approved by Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It is to be paid for with funds released by newly lifted sanctions against the Islamic Republic. The ayatollah aspires to rebuild the two branches – the IRGC with 150,000 troops and the regular army of 420,000 – as the most powerful armed force in the Middle East. Continue reading
