New Scientist, May 5, 2017 (emphasis added): Fukushima accident gave everyone an X-ray’s worth of radiation — “We don’t need to worry,” says Nikolaos Evangeliou at the Norwegian Institute for Air Research, whose team has conducted the first global survey of radiation exposure caused by the meltdown of three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant… Evangeliou’s team has calculated the approximate exposure of everyone on Earth to two radioactive isotopes of caesium… He has estimated the dose that most individuals received to be 0.1 millisievert. “What I found was that we got one extra X-ray each,” says Evangeliou… But Evangeliou says that the effects on wildlife around the plant might be more severe. Already, he says, increased levels of radiation around Fukushima have been linked to declines in bird populations there between 2011 and 2014. “There have also been reports of declines in other species such as insects and some mammals,” he says…

Nine states were placed on high alert following the theft [Google]

 

THE MEXICAN government has placed nine states on high alert after radioactive material capable of creating a dirty bomb was stolen near the nation’s second largest city.

The Iridium 192, a potentially highly unstable material used in radiography equipment, was stolen on the outskirts of tourist hotspot Guadalajara.

Luis Felipe Puente‏, head of national emergency services, placed nine states on high alert after the material disappeared just half a day’s drive from the Texan border.

Fukushima radiation detected off coast of B.C. 2

Trace amounts of radioactive isotopes from Fukushima power plant disaster have been detected along B.C.’s shoreline for the first time.

The traces were discovered Feb. 19 from samples collected in Ucluelet are well below internationally established levels of concern to humans and marine life, says the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).

Radioactivity from crippled Fukushima reactors turns up off B.C. coast

VANCOUVER — Radioactivity from Japan’s crippled nuclear reactors has turned up off the British Columbia coast and the level will likely peak in waters off North America in the next year or two, according to a Canadian-led team that’s intercepted the nuclear plume.

The team’s seawater measurements reveal Fukushima radioactivity first showed up 1,500 kilometres west of British Columbia in June 2012, more than a year after the Japanese nuclear accident.
