Russia’s Sevmash to Begin Construction of Two Nuclear Submarines in 2016

SEVERODVINSK (Sputnik) –Russia’s shipbuilding company Sevmash will begin the construction of two nuclear submarines, one Borei-class (project 955) and a Yasen-class (project 885) in 2016, the company’s general director said Friday.

New Russian submarine facilities currently under construction on the Kamchatka Peninsula could be completed by the end of October USNI News reports.

The Rybachiy Nuclear Submarine Base, located nine miles (15 kilometers) across Avacha Bay from the region’s capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, is home to most of Russia’s Pacific nuclear submarine fleet and will be the homeport of the Russian Navy’s new Borei-class (aka Dolgorukiy-class), Project 955, fourth generation SSBN (Ship, Submersible, Ballistic, Nuclear) submarines.

Russia upgrades its strategic missile forces

Construction of the seventh and eighth Project 955/955A Borei-class nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine is expected to begin before the end of 2015 to meet the current programme of completing eight boats for the Russian Navy by the end of 2020.
