America’s Cyber Vulnerabilities

ISTOCK.COM/MONSITJ

Cyber is the newest branch of warfare. Even in its baby stages, it has the potential to cripple the United States.

On the afternoon of Dec. 23, 2015, Ukrainian engineers from a Prykarpattya Oblenergo power station stared at a computer screen while the cursor progressed on its own across the monitor. The mouse on the table had not moved. But the cursor hovered over the station’s breakers, each one controlling power to thousands of Ukrainian citizens. Then, with one mouse click at a time, the hackers now in control of the power station began shutting off power to hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians.

At the same time, Kyivoblenergo employees watched as dozens of substations shut down, one by one. In their case, there was no phantom mouse. A computer on their network that they could not locate was being used by someone to shut down the power—and there was nothing they could do. Continue reading

State of emergency declared in Crimea after activists ‘blow up’ electricity pylons

Crimea left without power after power pylons blown up in what appears to be the latest attempt to enforce an economic blockade on the region which was annexed by Russia in March 2014

Russian authorities have declared a state of emergency in Crimea after nearly two million people on the peninsular were left without power by the destruction of two pylons carrying electricity from Ukraine.

The Russian Energy Ministry did not say what had caused the outages, but Russian media reported that two pylons in the Kherson region of Ukraine north of Crimea had been blown up by Ukrainian nationalists.

Lake Mead Has Dropped To Its Lowest Level Ever

Lake Mead

Less water, less electricity

California isn’t the only one having a water crisis. Yesterday, Lake Mead sank to its lowest level yet. The watery behemoth created by the construction of the Hoover Dam in the 1930s was reduced to a mere 1,080.07 feet above sea level, minimally smaller than the previous record of 1,080.19 set last August. Mystery at the sun’s south pole: Nasa reveals huge ‘coronal hole’ on the solar surface where winds reach 500 miles per SECOND

This could have an unprecedented effect on electronics on Earth, which could in turn cause further devastating effects on human life.

For those that follow Bible prophecy, look no further than Revelation 8:2.

Coronal holes are regions of the corona where the magnetic field reaches out into space rather than looping back down onto the surface - and eject solar winds far faster than other parts of the sun.

  • Coronal holes are regions of the corona where the magnetic field reaches out into space
  • Particles moving along those magnetic fields can leave the sun rather than being trapped near the surface
  • Polar coronal hole can remain visible for five years or longer, although constantly changes shape

There were no fireworks on the sun to welcome in the New Year – and in fact, scientists say the end of the year was relatively quiet on the solar surface.

However, the sun has started 2015 with a mysterious event – a huge hole has appeared.

Known as a coronal hole, the phenomenon occurred near the south pole – and is seen as a dark area covered all of its base in these stunning images.

Who Will Be Tomorrow’s Superpower?

The geo-political map is set to change. Is the world ready?

There’s a popular geopolitical parlor game called Who will be the next superpower?

While the game excels at triggering a mind-fogging tsunami of nationalistic emotions, it doesn’t shed much light on the really consequential question: What is power?

These are important questions to ponder as, around the world, unsustainable policies from the 20th century are beginning to fail in earnest. What will the future geopolitical landscape look like in their aftermath?
