Since 1979, the American Institute in Taiwan has served as the lone U.S. diplomatic outpost for the island but under the terms of the Taiwan Relations Act, it is not an embassy. This is due to the move made by President Jimmy Carter that “de-recognized” the Republic of China (Taiwan) and instead recognized the People’s Republic of China.

Taiwanese troops Tuesday staged live-fire exercises simulating a response to an invasion, as China steppeds up pressure on the island’s President Tsai Ing-wen and a row over airline routes escalated.

The military sent reconnaissance aircraft to observe simulated incoming ships, and tanks fired rounds as the “enemy” landed at the eastern port of Hualien.

China Says It Should Prepare to Invade Taiwan

Beijing is furious that United States President-elect Donald Trump said that the U.S. would not necessarily be bound by the one-China policy. In response, China is saying it should be prepared to take Taiwan by military force.

The one-China policy is a diplomatic acknowledgement of China’s view that Taiwan is not an independent, sovereign, democratic nation, but is instead a breakaway province of Communist China that will eventually be reincorporated under mainland rule. Since 1979, the policy has underpinned ties between Washington and Beijing, and has allowed the U.S. only a nonofficial relationship with Taiwan.

ANGELA Merkel has said that Germany will stick with the “one China” policy in a brazen opposition to Donald Trump’s stance against the country.

The move could put her in conflict with the President-elect after he indicated that the super power could reconsider its long-held diplomatic stance of seeing Taiwan as part of China.

During a press conference with the Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, Ms Merkel said: “We still stand by a ‘one China’ policy and we will not change our stance.”

China cuts official contact with Taiwan over new president

BEIJING: China said Saturday (Jun 25) that communications with Taiwan had been suspended after the island’s new government failed to acknowledge the concept that there is only “one China”.

Relations between the two sides have grown increasingly frosty since President Tsai Ing-wen won Taiwan’s leadership by a landslide in January and took office in May, ending eight years of rapprochement.

“The bilateral communication mechanism has been suspended,” TAO spokesman An Fengshan said on its website.

Xi Jinping will address Taiwan issue before 2022: scholar

Translation: There will Taiwanese unification with China before 2022, either by war or diplomacy.

 

Xi Jinping’s efforts to transform China’s image into that of a major world power must include an attempt to address the Taiwan issue before the end of his time in power, says Jin Canrong, head of the School of International Studies at Renmin University of China in Beijing.

In a media interview on Tuesday, Jin said Xi’s announcement at the UN General Assembly in New York that China will create an 8,000-strong peacekeeping standby force is an “aggressive signal” that he wants China to develop the image of a major world leader like the United States.
