Nuclear Questions, Nuclear Answers

The next administration will face a number of important nuclear policy decisions. On May 13, I invited Franklin Miller, a Principal in the Scowcroft Group, and a former top White House defense official, to discuss these matters before an audience of Congressional staff, senior administration defense and security officials, top staff from defense and security public policy organizations, defense media, defense industry officials and a number of allied embassy colleagues. It was interestingly the 1400th seminar I have hosted on the Hill since 1983 on key defense and national security matters.

Franklin Miller in his prepared remarks extensively addressed the nature of the current debate on future nuclear modernization and whether the US force was obsolete, unaffordable, destabilizing or an obstacle to further arms control. Those remarks were posted recently by Family Security Matters. Continue reading

Saudi Press: We Must Have A Military Nuclear Program Within A Decade

Following the July 14, 2015 announcement in Vienna of the Iran-P5+1 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the Saudi press featured numerous articles openly calling for Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states to use the coming decade – the time frame of the JCPOA – to develop their own military nuclear program, against the nuclear threat that they say Iran will constitute after the agreement expires.

There have already been calls for a clandestine Saudi nuclear program to parallel Iran’s, which were backed up by official Saudi sources. For example, the month before the announcement of the JCPOA, Saudi Ambassador to the U.K. Emir Muhammad bin Nawwaf bin ‘Abd Al-‘Aziz Al-Saud told the Daily Telegraph that if the upcoming nuclear agreement with Iran did not include a serious Iranian commitment to refrain from developing nuclear weapons, then as far as Saudi Arabia is concerned, “all options are on the table.” He emphasized that over the years, his country had opposed the development of nuclear weapons, but that Iran’s policy on the issue “has changed the whole outlook in the region.”[1] Continue reading

‘Israel, Prepare For Armageddon And Forget US Help’

EMPact America founder warns of Iran nuclear threat, says under Obama US has turned into an ‘enemy of Israel.’

Henry Schwartz, a prominent entrepreneur and EMPact America  founder, spoke with Arutz Sheva following his organization’s National Security Action Summit last week. The purpose of the conference was to save America from a “dire” situation, revealed Schwartz.

US President Barack Obama has given Iran permission to build a nuclear weapon through a “bogus deal,” charged Schwartz, warning the Iranians “will come back to Israel, G-d forbid, they will come back to America.”

Schwartz warned that the Obama administration is “effectively an enemy” of Israel, opining that if Israeli acted to take out Iran’s nuclear program, “Obama would probably be a detriment to Israel,” and “feed intelligence” to Iran about Israeli activities. Continue reading

An electromagnetic pulse attack — the ‘other’ Iranian nuclear threat

Just what might happen if the Iranians got their hands on a nuclear weapon? Would they fire it at an Israeli city, causing tens or hundreds of thousands of casualties? Or would they use it as a geopolitical weapon, seeking to dominate the Middle East and forcing the hand of Western powers, either subtly or by overtly threatening death and destruction to those who fail to heed their dictates?

While political scientists and world leaders have debated the likelihood of those two possibilities, there is a third plausible scenario: The use of a nuclear weapon by Iran to carry out an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack against Israel, the US, or Europe. Such an attack could cause severe damage to the electrical grid in the targeted nations, to the extent that the routines of daily life — centered around the use of electrical power — could be halted, for a short or even long period of time. Russian Military Admits Iran, North Korea Nuclear Threat Possibility

“The threat is always there, so we closely monitor the nuclear program developments of many countries,” Army General Nikolai Makarov, the chief of the General Staff, told RT television.

Vladimir Putin fires off nuclear threat over West’s ‘regime change’ plans for Iran

“Unfortunately, there are many regional conflicts and their number is only growing. But the balance of strategic forces will help avoid major conflicts,” he warned.

Mr Putin laid out a future Russian nuclear defence strategy that kept the United States from establishing a global monopoly on power.

“This is not only our national objective, but also an obligation before all humanity – to keep a balance of strategic forces and their capabilities,” he said.

“This is very important. After World War II, this balance ensured the absence of global conflicts.
