RUSSIA has completed a massive deployment of hardware and personnel to military bases across the Arctic, restoring its power in the hotly-disputed region to levels not seen since the end of the Cold War.

A vast swathe of the frozen continent is now back under the Kremlin’s iron grip after six military bases received final delivery of troops, warplanes, ships and military vehicles.

Two S-400 missile systems – the same as those sent to defend Russian jets in Syria – have been deployed to Russia‘s Arctic region north of the polar circle in the last year.

Large-scale U.S. military exercises held as Russia re-opens Arctic naval base

An Army rapid deployment force will practice securing the Pentagon’s strategic missile defenses base in Alaska this week as part of annual exercises involving both conventional and nuclear forces.

Defense officials said an Army Quick Reaction Force (QRF) of 55 airborne troops, along with weapons and vehicles, will parachute into Fort Greely, Alaska, on Thursday as part of exercises called Vigilant Shield.

The QRF, made up of highly-trained, extremely mobile forces, will quickly unpack vehicles and arms and move to set up a security perimeter around the Ground-Based Interceptor (GBI) field at the base—all within minutes of hitting the ground, said officials familiar with some details of the exercise. The exercises will continue through Oct. 28.

Russia to test modernized anti-submarine aircraft

MOSCOW, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) — Russia’s Northern Fleet will test a modernized anti-submarine aircraft, the Il-38N, which could be used in the Arctic region, a military official said Sunday.

“The plane has been enhanced with new generation detachable hydroacoustic and magnetic beacons that surpass their Western counterparts in a range of ways,” the RIA Novosti news agency quoted the fleet’s spokesman, Vadim Serga, as saying.
