Beijing’s Sept. 3 military parade to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day is partly aimed at sending a message of warning to the United States, says Huang Dong, president of the Macau International Military Institute.
In an interview with the Hong Kong newspaper Ming Pao, Huang said the purpose of the parade goes beyond just commemorating victory in World War II and includes demonstrating China’s military prowess to the US and warning Washington to not “interfere” in its regional activities, in particular its territorial disputes in the East China and South China seas. News reports suggest that Chinese extremists with links to the Islamic State group were responsible for a knife attack at a rail station in China last week. The news comes as the Communist Party boss for the far western Xinjiang province, which borders several Middle East countries, announced that several Chinese extremists were returning to the country after fighting with the so-called Islamic State abroad. Hong Kong military commentator Leung Guo-liang said China’s airborne early warning and control system is the world’s most advanced radar system, according to Hong Kong’s Ming Pao.
Wang Xiaomo, one of the developers behind China’s airborne early warning and control system, said the country has made nine breakthroughs in the development of the system that put it ahead of the United States.
