ABU DHABI — An ongoing U.S.-led naval exercise involving 20 nations from the Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and North America is intended to ensure rapid control of the Gulf in case of war with Iran.
Officials said the International Mine Countermeasures Exercise was the largest ever of its kind in the region and was designed to test the capability of a U.S.-led naval coalition to rapidly
seize the Gulf from Iran.
IMCMEX-2012, based in Bahrain, has included a range of air and naval assets. Officials cited aircraft carriers, frigates, minesweepers,
corvettes, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles and the new so-called afloat forward staging base.
