Russia Plans to Replace Aircraft Autopilots With AI

 

Chairman of the Federation Council Defense and Security Committee Viktor Bondarev, the former commander of Russia’s Aerospace Force, said Wednesday:

“[F]lying robots will be able to act in a formation rather than separately. Perhaps, an operator will be sitting on the ground and controlling a whole unmanned squadron with the help of a computer … [T]he day is nearing when vehicles will get artificial intelligence. So, why not entrust aviation or air defense to them?”

Putin urges Russian nuclear weapons boost

Moscow (AFP) – Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday called for the country to reinforce its military nuclear potential and praised the army’s performance in its Syria campaign.

In a speech that recapped military activities in 2016, Putin said the army’s preparedness has “considerably increased” and called for continued improvement that would ensure it can “neutralise any military threat”.

“We need to strengthen the military potential of strategic nuclear forces, especially with missile complexes that can reliably penetrate any existing and prospective missile defence systems,” the Kremlin strongman said. Continue reading

Russian warship flotilla now off Syrian coast: military

A flotilla of Russian warships is now in the eastern Mediterranean off the Syrian coast after being sent to reinforce Russia’s military in the area, a naval commander said on state television.

The commander of Russia’s flagship Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, Sergei Artamonov, said via videolink that the ships are now in the “designated zone… in the eastern Mediterranean” and “are now jointly carrying out tasks, manoeuvering to the west of the Syrian coast”. Continue reading
