Nato is searching for two potentially dangerous Russian submarines

 

NATO ships and aircraft are desperately hunting for two deadly Russian cruise-missile submarines amid fears the fleet was ready to strike French and US aircraft in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Fears for the safety of French carrier Charles de Gaulle and US craft USS Eisenhower have increased following reports that two Russian Oscar-II submarines are shadowing the aircraft carriers in the waters off the coast of war torn Syria.

Both carriers have been launching air strikes against the brutal Islamic State regime while a Russian flotilla of warships has been operating in the same area.

After initially refusing to provide details, the Pentagon on Tuesday confirmed that a Chinese jet made an unsafe pass near a U.S. RC-135 surveillance jet last week.

“I can confirm for you that the department’s reviewing a report that came in from [U.S. Pacific Command] regarding a Sept. 15 intercept of a U.S. RC-135 by an aircraft from the People’s Republic of China,” Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook told reporters.

RUSSIAN bombers which were caught flying close to the Cornish coast are likely to have gathered “valuable intelligence”, senior military figures have warned.

Britain called in NATO sea patrol planes to hunt for a suspected Russian submarine off Scotland, after the Government scrapped its own similar aircraft in defence cuts.

Maritime patrol aircraft from France, America and Canada flew to Scotland to join Royal Navy warships hunting for the suspected submarine after it was spotted west of Scotland.

At the height of the hunt, in late November and the first days of this month, four allied patrol planes flew to RAF Lossiemouth to join the search, Aviation Week reported.

It came a month after another suspected Russian submarine was spotted off Sweden’s Stockholm archipelago, and with relations with the Kremlin at their worst since the Cold War.
