Japan warns China making new platform in East China Sea

Tokyo: China has been constructing a new offshore platform near the median line between its shoreline and that of Japan in the East China Sea, where China is developing gas fields, according to the Japanese government.

At a Friday meeting of the House of Representatives’ special committee on security legislation, Japanese Defence Minister Gen Nakatani said the move could become a security concern.

China “could install a radar system on the platform, or use it as an operating base for helicopters or drones conducting air patrols”, he said. Continue reading

PLA staging large night-landing drills in Bohai, Yellow Sea

The People’s Liberation Army has launched a large-scale night-landing military exercise in the Bohai Sea and the northern part of the Yellow Sea, state media reported.

It was the first military exercise conducted by the PLA since the conclusion of the third plenum of the Communist Party’s Central Committee a week ago in Beijing. Continue reading
