SRINAGAR India – Indian and Pakistani troops intensified firing across the border over the weekend killing at least four, an Indian official said on Sunday, straining ties between the arch rivals who recently called off top-level diplomatic talks.
The Himalayan region of Kashmir has been a bone of contention between India and Pakistan since both countries became independent in 1947. They have fought three wars and came close to a fourth in 2001 and there have been regular clashes on the Line of Control that divides Indian- and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir. Continue reading
In reaction to China’s long-planned ‘string of pearls‘ containment of India:
NEW DELHI — Addressing the top commanders of the Indian Navy on Tuesday, Defence Minister A.K. Antony announced that additional naval bases and air stations are required to extend the Navy’s reach.
“Antony said the construction of additional bases and naval air stations in Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep & Minicoy Islands is necessary to further extend our operational reach,” said a Defence Ministry statement. Continue reading
A leaked Indian government document indicated that Chinese submarines have ventured into the Indian Ocean region frequently and have posed “a grave danger to India’s security interest.”
The document, originated from the Indian Defense Ministry, is called “Indian Navy: Perceived Threats to Subsurface Deterrent Capability and Preparedness,” and was obtained by the newspaper Hindustan Times. Continue reading
