An Unofficial Plebiscite

BERLIN/BARCELONA (Own report) – The German establishment is sending mixed signals in reaction to the announcement of an unofficial plebiscite on Catalonia’s secession from Spain. Catalan Prime Minister Artur Mas has declared the September 27 regional elections a de facto plebiscite on the region’s secession. Should his alliance secure the absolute majority, he will proclaim independence from Spain within 8 months. In the past, Germany had repeatedly supported Catalan secession. Influential German think tanks are demanding that secession not be obstructed. However, there is opposition rising from within business circles. Catalonia is a central site for German companies in Spain. Engaged in trade throughout Spain, they do not want to see their business possibilities limited to one region and Barcelona’s secession from Madrid could possibly prove an obstacle. According to German government advisors, on the other hand, these problems could be solved. Some economists contend that the EU’s currency, the Euro, can, in the long run, only be maintained within a uniform economic area. This would exclude Spain, but include a seceded Catalonia, the strongest economic zone on the Iberian Peninsular.

EU Commission Insists Member States Will Be Forced to Accept New Migrants

The European Commission (EC) will insist that a proposed system of relocating undocumented immigrants be mandatory for all EU member countries, EC spokeswoman for Migration Natasha Bertaud said Monday.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – In late May, the EC proposed to relocate some 40,000 asylum seekers from third world countries, who are currently residing in Italy and Greece, to other EU member states as part of its agenda to manage the crisis of undocumented immigration.

BERLIN (Own report) – Prominent German think tanks and politicians are calling for the establishment of an EU army. To this effect, “integration options” in military policy are viewed as appropriate, for example, at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP). In a paper published by the German Ministry of Defense, an SWP researcher writes that the current financial crisis has clearly shown some European countries that “sovereignty built on autonomy is illusory.” However, to prevent possible reservations of some EU member countries, the author recommends avoiding the label “European army.” Efforts tending in the same direction but “under a different name” would have “more chances of success.” The Vice President of the European Parliament, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff (FDP) of Germany, has expressed a similar view. “Only a European approach” to military matters can assure that the “economic giant” Germany will not remain a “political dwarf” when enforcing “western values and interests,” Lambsdorff declared in a newspaper article.

Israel furious at EU directive to stop doing business with Israelis residing in 1967 lands

The European Union (EU) has issued a directive to all of its 28 member states that forbids any form of cooperation, including funding, scholarships, and research grants, to any Israelis residing in areas that Israel acquired in 1967, meaning the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Golan Heights.

The regulation, which goes into effect on Friday, means that any contract between EU member countries and Israel or and Israeli entity must include a clause that specifically asserts that those areas are not part of the state of Israel, a senior Israeli official told The Media Line.
