Germany Enters Dangerous, Uncharted Waters

 

After weeks of tottering on the edge, Germany this week fell into full-blown political crisis.

On Sunday, the Free Democrats pulled out of discussions to form a coalition government. This caused the four-party negotiations to collapse.

Germany is in uncharted waters politically. This situation is unprecedented. The nation hasn’t experienced this much ambiguity and political instability since the Weimar years of the 1920s.

Der Spiegel wrote this week that this “is an unprecedented moment of uncertainty for a country that prizes stability and predictability above all else.” It is also reported that it is “difficult to overstate the impact of the collapsed talks.”

White House adviser Stephen Miller claimed Sunday that the Trump administration has provided evidence of widespread voter fraud, echoing claims made by President Donald Trump in recent weeks when he said fraud essentially denied him winning the popular vote.

In the interview, ABC host George Stephanopoulos hit back, saying neither he or Trump have provided evidence to back up their claims. “You have provided zero evidence of the president’s claim that he would’ve won the general—the popular vote if 3 [million] to 5 million illegal immigrants hadn’t voted,” Stephanopoulos said on the show before signing off.

Marine Le Pen: EU will collapse like the Soviet Union

The leader of France’s far-Right party has vowed that the European Union would “collapse like the Soviet Union” as she conspired to form what would be the most radical faction yet seen in the European parliament.

Marine Le Pen, buoyed by a weekend by-election triumph in southern France, criticised the EU as a “global anomaly” and pledged to return the bloc to a “cooperation of sovereign states”.

Ex-KGB Boss Is South Ossetia’s New President

In actuality, this has less to do with bringing back an “old dream” to a small ‘breakaway region’ and more to do with the USSR reasserting itself.

A former KGB chief has won the presidency in Georgia’s breakaway region of South Ossetia, where Moscow is trying to re-assert control.

Leonid Tibilov, 60, won with 54.1% of the vote in a run-off against presidential human rights commissioner David Sanakoyev, election commission chief Bella Pliyeva said.

“We will develop the relationship with Russia in all areas. We are aiming to make an old dream about the reunification of South and North Ossetia a reality,” he told reporters at a polling station in the region’s capital, Tskhinvali.
