The ruling follows a 2009 report by Argentina that fixed its territory 200 to 350 miles from its coast, surrounding the archipelago it calls the Malvinas.

The decision by UN bosses could have significant consequences for Buenos Aires’ claim to natural resources in the sea around the disputed island chain.

Russia to Open Arctic Military Drone Base 420 Miles off the Alaskan Coast

Russia has announced plans to build a drone base for military reconnaissance in a town just 420 miles off mainland Alaska and just over 300 miles off the US state’s St Lawrence Island, Russia’s state news agency reported on Thursday.

“The command of the eastern military district in charge of the military development of the Arctic zone has moved forward with plans to form an unmanned aerial vehicle division,” Alexandr Gordeev, spokesperson for the district said.

The new base’s key objective will be to provide air reconnaissance for the Russian navy in its eastern waters which directly border U.S. waters.

Canada to lay claim to North Pole amid Arctic resources rush

(Reuters) – Canada intends to lay claim to the North Pole as part of a bid to assert control over a large part of the resource-rich Arctic, Foreign Minister John Baird said on Monday.

Baird said Canada had filed a preliminary submission to a special United Nations commission collecting competing claims and would be submitting more data later.
