It is one of the most impressive economic and political miracles in modern times. And it isn’t over yet.

China is a sovereign state with a population of over 1.3 billion people. The nation possesses the world’s largest economy by some measurements, the world’s largest population and the fourth-largest territory.

These are the building blocks of a superpower. While the world anticipates China gaining superpower status, analysts debate over when and whether its rise will be peaceful.

Denmark applies to join China-backed AIIB investment bank

(Reuters) – Denmark has applied to join the Beijing-led Asian Infrastructure Bank (AIIB), China’s Ministry of Finance said on Sunday, becoming the latest European power to join the institution despite misgivings of the United States.

The Ministry of Finance said that Denmark has written to China to “announce its intention to apply to be a founding member” of the AIIB. Continue reading

China aims to break U.S. hold in Asia with rival to World Bank

Beijing diplomats on charm offensive to rally support for new institution free from U.S. control.

China wants to set up a multilateral development bank in Asia to break the U.S.’s financial hold on the continent, the Financial Times reported Tuesday, citing officials familiar with the matter.

It said that Chinese officials have been touring Asia and the Middle East drumming up support for a new institution with $100 billion in capital, with a view to financing major development projects such as infrastructure.
