Chinese jets carried out “island encirclement patrols” around Taiwan

 

TAIWAN is “confident” in its defences and responded quickly to Chinese air force “island encirclement” drills, the self-ruled island’s government said.

On Monday, Chinese jets carried out “island encirclement patrols” around Taiwan, with state media showing pictures of bombers armed with cruise missiles.

Taiwan presidential spokesman Alex Huang said the defence ministry kept a close watch on the patrols and responded immediately and properly.

The day an American warship makes a port call in Taiwan will be the day the Chinese military launches an all-out assault against the island, a Chinese diplomat in the U.S. warned Friday. The senior official’s “words have sent a warning to Taiwan and drew a clear red line,” China’s nationalist tabloid Global Times asserted Monday.

“The day that a U.S. Navy vessel arrives in Kaohsiung, is the day that our People’s Liberation Army unites Taiwan with military force,” Li Kexin, the minister at the Chinese Embassy in Washington, said at an embassy event, Taiwan media reports.

China Says It Should Prepare to Invade Taiwan

Beijing is furious that United States President-elect Donald Trump said that the U.S. would not necessarily be bound by the one-China policy. In response, China is saying it should be prepared to take Taiwan by military force.

The one-China policy is a diplomatic acknowledgement of China’s view that Taiwan is not an independent, sovereign, democratic nation, but is instead a breakaway province of Communist China that will eventually be reincorporated under mainland rule. Since 1979, the policy has underpinned ties between Washington and Beijing, and has allowed the U.S. only a nonofficial relationship with Taiwan.

‘Taiwan issue’ will not go unresolved indefinitely, PLA general warns

A PLA general has warned that “the Taiwan issue will not remain unresolved in the long term” and that China is not ruling out the use of force to achieving unification after Taiwan’s ruling Kuomintang suffered a drubbing in last month’s local government elections. The major winner at the polls was the opposition Democratic Progressive Party, which has traditionally advocated Taiwan independence.

“We will not abandon the possibility of using force. According to the law, it is also an option to resolve the issue by military means if necessary,” Liu Jingsong, a former president of the Chinese Academy of Military Sciences, said in a keynote speech on Nov. 6 at a conference organized by China’s nationalistic tabloid Global Times.
