Russia’s Choice: Power Balancer or China’s Canada?

The reset between the Kremlin and the White House is dead.

Now, the question in Moscow is: what will replace it? Continue reading

Nasserist-nationalist, anti-US slogans unexpectedly dominate anti-Morsi protests in Cairo

The protest rallies against Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi staged across Egypt Sunday June 30, a year after he took power, offered two surprises. Rather than an outpouring of anti-Islamist rage, the tenor of the banners, placards and chants raised over Cairo’s Tahrir Square echoed the slogans of pan-Arab, nationalism, socialism and xenophobia, with which the charismatic Gemal Abdel Nasser caught the Arab world by storm half a century ago. The Muslim Brotherhood rule in Egypt, thrown up by the Arab Revolt, may face the challenge of a neo-Arab nationalistic uprising, a throwback to the Nasserist era.

There was also a strong strain of anti-American sentiment. Continue reading

EXCLUSIVE: New book reveals how KGB operation seeded Muslim countries with anti-American, anti-Jewish propaganda during the 1970s, laying the groundwork for Islamist terrorism against U.S. and Israel

This would be nothing new to those who follow more in life than the Kardashians. It’s well documented that the KGB has trained other individuals such as Ayman al-Zawahiri, a key plotter and mastermind in 9/11, as well as Osama bin Laden’s Egyptian lieutenant. Consider the following:

Radical Islam was long ago infiltrated by Moscow’s agents — as evidenced by East German and Cuban support for the Saudi Islamists who attacked the Grand Mosque in 1979, as well as the KGB’s clandestine role in provoking the Iranian hostage crisis during the Carter administration (see Bodansky’s Bin Laden: The Man Who Declared War on America, p. 9). It is therefore unlikely that the Russians would fail to identify Zawahiri (as he was the most important Egyptian terrorist in the Islamist movement). They knew they had an Arab in custody. Any Arabist in the Russian intelligence service would be able to tell an Egyptian from a local yokel. Furthermore, since Moscow was secretly supporting the Serbs against the Bosnians in Yugoslavia, the Kremlin could not have missed Zawahiri’s activities in organizing resistance to the Moscow-backed Yugoslav central government. But things are not so simple in “former” communist countries. As with the Chechen War, the civil war following the breakup of Yugoslavia has an interesting pre-history in the literature of Russian grand strategy.

In his 1982 book, We Will Bury You, Czech communist defector Jan Sejna described Moscow’s long-range strategy in detail. With reference to Yugoslavia, Sejna wrote that Moscow “intended to exploit the nationalities question by infiltrating the nationalist [i.e., Croation, Serbian and Bosnian] leadership, and to penetrate the various opposition movements….” If Yugoslavia fell into the hands of a pro-Western group, wrote Sejna, “the Russians would try to break up Yugoslavia into separate states….”

Those who are naïve about international politics will remain naïve about Ayman al-Zawahiri. He is one of those radicals calling for “maximum casualties” in America. One ought to wonder, given the number of Muslims killed by the Russians in Afghanistan and Chechnya why Zawahiri doesn’t call for “maximum casualties” in Russia. America has not invaded and occupied Muslim territory. Meanwhile Chinese and Russian troops stand guard over the Islamic people of Central Asia.

The highest-ranking Soviet-bloc intelligence officer ever to defect to the West claims in a new book that anti-American Islamic terrorism had its roots in a secret 1970s-era KGB plot to harm but the United States and Israel by seeding Muslim countries with carefully targeted propaganda.

Yuri Andropov, the KGB chief for 15 years before he became the Soviet premier, sent hundreds of agents and thousands of copies of propaganda literature to Muslim countries. Continue reading

Russia’s Putin tells army to shape up for foreign threat

While the military threat currently emanating from Moscow may not be immediate, it’s purpose is five 5% sabre rattling and 95% conditioning for immediate combat readiness for an immanent war in the near future. Meanwhile, America is lulled into a false sense of security and still twittering about the Oscars, while its defensive and offensive capabilities are stripped/disarmed by its top leadership.

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Vladimir Putin ordered military leaders on Wednesday to make urgent improvements to the armed forces during his new presidential term, saying Russia must thwart attempts by the West to tip the strategic balance of power.

“Attempts are being made to tip the strategic balance,” said Putin, who as president is commander-in-chief of the armed forces, told his audience at the General Staff academy on Moscow’s outskirts. The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, sat in the front row.

“Geopolitical dynamics call for a quick and considered response … Russia’s armed forces must move on to a new level of capabilities in the next three to five years,” said Putin, who has not ruled out seeking another term in 2018.

He said drills must be sharpened up and held with less advance warning, to keep soldiers on their toes. Continue reading

IRAN OFFICIAL: ATTACK ON SYRIA IS ATTACK ON IRAN

Giving credibility to today’s DEBKAfile report:

Iran is Syria’s strongest ally in the Middle East, and has provided Assad’s government with military and political backing for years. In September, the top commander of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, said the elite unit had high-level advisers in Syria. Iran also is believed to be sending weapons and money to Syria as it endures its worst crisis in decades.

“Syria plays a very key role in supporting or, God forbid, destabilizing the resistance front,” Velayati was quoted by Iran’s semiofficial Mehr news agency as saying. “For this same reason, (an) attack on Syria is considered (an) attack on Iran and Iran’s allies.Continue reading

What’s Mohammed Morsi Doing in China?

Egypt may be looking to sever ties with America and join the Iran-China axis.

We know why Egypt’s president went to Iran.

The question is, why did he also visit China?

Morsi landed in Beijing on Tuesday, and was warmly welcomed by Chinese President Hu Jintao. For two days, the president and his 80-person entourage of Egyptian business leaders and politicians discussed investment projects with some 200 Chinese counterparts. (Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the China Development Bank had extended a $200 million line of credit to the National Bank of Egypt.) It’s important to note that this was Morsi’s first state visit outside the Middle East and Africa since he became president. Despite the way it appears, this was not a routine state visit.

China is the nation world leaders visit when they want to oppose or undermine America!

Perhaps this is over-simplifying it a little, but the supreme goal of China’s foreign policy, at least for now, is to oppose and undermine U.S. global power and influence. Be it China’s ongoing naval and military expansion, its regional spats over territorial acquisitions, its behavior in international organizations like the World Trade Organization, or its support of anti-American states like Venezuela and North Korea, Beijing exploits every opportunity to counter America. More than any other reason, this is why China remains a staunch ally of Iran.

The fact that Morsi chose to visit China indicates that Egypt may be looking to join this Iran-China axis!
