Russia Claims It Now Has Lasers To Shoot Satellites

A defense source tells Russian media that military engineers have advanced work on the next big anti-satellite weapon.

Russian defense companies have created a plane-mounted laser that can hit satellites — at least according to an anonymous source quoted by Russian news agency Interfax. On Saturday, an Interfax report cited the source as saying that weapons maker Almaz-Antey has “completed work on the anti-satellite complex,” which includes the laser and associated ground control gear.

Russia’s Brand-New S-500 Missile System to Have Unprecedented Damage Radius

Not only are the Russians right around the corner from deploying hypersonic missiles that can beat American missile defenses, they have a system that renders enemy hypersonic missiles useless. In short, when America decides to finally catch up and deploy its hypersonic missiles, they will be useless.

In an interview with Sputnik, Russian military expert Viktor Baranets specifically touted unprecedented the damage range of Russia’s next-generation S-500 Prometey missile system, which is currently undergoing state tests.

Earlier this week, Pavel Sozinov, chief engineer of the Russian defense corporation Almaz-Antey, said that Russia’s next-generation S-500 surface-to-air missile system would be able to engage targets in the upper layer of the atmosphere, 100 kilometers [62 miles] above the Earth’s surface.

The S-500, designed by Almaz Antey, is said to have a range of 600 kilometers (more than 370 miles). The system can simultaneously intercept up to ten ballistic and hypersonic missiles traveling at a speed of up to 7 kilometers per second. S-500 to strengthen Russia’s ‘air defense system for the 21 Century’

Basically, what Russia has with the S-500 is, not only air-defense, but a ground-based space weapons system. America was to be first in weaponizing space with Reagan’s “Star Wars” system, however it was eventually mothballed and eliminated by politicians. After almost a decade of military cuts and self destruction, America has a lot of catching up to do… if it still can.

 

The S-500, designed by Almaz Antey, is said to have a range of 600 kilometers (more than 370 miles). The system can simultaneously intercept up to ten ballistic and hypersonic missiles traveling at a speed of 7 kilometers per second. The Prometey is capable of engaging targets at an altitude of up to 200 kilometers (more than 120 miles).

 

Cheburin, commander of the missile defense division of the 1st Air and Anti-Ballistic Missile Defense Army of the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces, told the newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda that activities aimed at creating “an integrated national defense system of the 21st century are in full swing.”

“This system will be finalized when [the Russian] Armed Forces receive the brand new long-range S-500 surface-to-air missile system and advanced radars,” he explained. Continue reading

Russia’s new missile has 250-mile reach

Russia has a new, long-range missile for its S-300V4 anti-ballistic missile system that is capable of striking targets up to 250 miles away, officials said Thursday.

That means that Airborne early warning and control aircraft, including AWACS [Airborne Warning and Control System], will noew [sic] be unable to enter the 400-kilometer zone without repercussions,” Pavel Sozinov, chief designer for the state-run Almaz-Antey defense company, told the TASS news service. Next-Gen S-500 Systems to Be Fully Protected Against Eavesdropping

We’re likely looking at Russia’s answer to America’s hypersonic glide vehicle that can reach anywhere on the globe within an hour. Meanwhile, the United States has nothing to show that can defend the mainland from a Russian or Chinese attack involving their hypersonic glide vehicles.

 

In other words, no unauthorized persons will be able to listen to S-500 communications or disrupt them. This will be a significant upgrade to the cutting-edge complex in an age when concealment and resistance to jamming are key features for air defense systems.

Previously, signals could be tracked and intercepted because radio stations used predetermined frequencies. The newest radio communications systems are fully protected against eavesdropping. According to the source, they are highly resistant to jamming since they use pseudo random frequency-hopping among other techniques.
