Egyptian Columnist: Arab Countries Should Become Nuclear Threshold States, To Gain Global Influence

The Fourth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) was held in April 27-May 22, 2015.[1] At the end of the conference, the U.S. blocked an Egyptian-led proposal to convene a summit by March 2016, with or without Israel’s assent, on disarming the Middle East of nuclear weapons.

Prior to this, Dr. Muhammad Al-Sa’id Idris, a columnist for the Egyptian daily Al-Ahram, published an article in which he argued that, instead of being members in the NPT, the Arab countries should strive to develop real nuclear programs and become nuclear threshold states. He wrote that the Arabs’ participation in the conference was meaningless, since Israel, backed by the U.S., would not sign the NPT and would continue to oppose a Middle East free of nuclear weapons. Hence, in order to gain global influence, the Arab states must leave the NPT and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and develop their own nuclear capabilities. Continue reading

Moscow & Cairo to drop USD, use national currencies in bilateral trade – Putin

Now that the Mubarak regime through political allies is back in power after restoring the country through military channels, it likely has a score to settle with Washington and how it’s going to do this is through partnering with Russia (and possibly China). Russia already has military deals in the pipeline (See also HERE) with Egypt. Once the military deals begin and the country is stabilized once more, look for further political and economic cooperation like we see here. It doesn’t look like America is heeding the call to protect its interests in Egypt and stop the spread of neo-Soviet influence.

Russia and Egypt might soon exclude the US dollar and use their national currencies in the settlement of accounts in bilateral trade, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview to Egyptian media ahead of his Monday visit to the country.

The issue of abandoning the dollar in trade is “being actively discussed,” Putin told Al-Ahram daily newspaper ahead of his two-day trip to Egypt. The Russian president was invited for a bilateral meeting by his Egyptian counterpart Abdul Fattah al-Sisi. Continue reading

Mursi, Egypt army pledge lives in ‘final hours’ showdown

(Reuters) – Egypt’s army commander and Islamist President Mohamed Mursi each pledged his life to defy the other as a deadline approached on Wednesday that will trigger a military takeover backed by protesters.

The military chiefs, wanting to restore order in a country racked by protests over Mursi’s Islamist policies, issued a call to battle in a statement headlined “The Final Hours”. They said they were willing to shed blood against “terrorists and fools” after Mursi refused to give up his elected office.

Mursi said, “The price … is my life.Continue reading
