Both countries are nuclear-armed and border China.
India has vowed it will use “all instruments at its command” in response to Pakistan’s alleged role in a deadly bombing that occurred in Kashmir on Friday.
The nuclear-armed neighbors, which border China, saw tensions escalated substantially over the weekend following a suicide bombing attack that killed 40 Indian security troops. The Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed Islamist group claimed responsibility for the attack.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who faces a general election no later than May, announced he was giving security forces the freedom to “avenge” the Kashmir killings. He added:
“India will exercise all instruments at its command, whether it is diplomatic or otherwise. India has all options. You need not exhaust all options on day one. This is not a one-week battle. It’s to be undertaken in various forms.
“I think Pakistan is riding a tiger on this issue, and a tiger never spares its own rider.”
