The Wagner Group is the same quasi-independent mercenary group that was routed by U.S. forces in Syria last year.
Russia has reportedly doubled down on its support for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by sending “security contractors” to Caracas to provide protection for the dictator.
Reuters reports that contractors working for the Wagner Group, mercenaries with direct ties to the Kremlin and President Vladimir Putin, have already arrived in Venezuela to perform personal security for Maduro. The Wagner Group is the same organization that lost approximately 100 soldiers in a direct confrontation with U.S. forces in Syria last year.
The Reuters report states the Wagner Group “contractors” made a stopover in Cuba en route to Caracas, but it does not state when the Wagner Group soldiers arrived or when they would be leaving. As TruNews reported Thursday, the Maduro government is indebted to both Moscow and Beijing to the tune of tens of billions of dollars.
The U.S. has evacuated all non-emergency personnel from its diplomatic mission and also urged all other citizens in the country to leave immediately. Meanwhile, former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa told Russian broadcaster RT that he could not rule out the possibility of American-backed “military action” in Venezuela.
