He insists his comments to The Sun newspaper critical of the UK prime minister were ‘fake news’ that didn’t demonstrate his complete views.

The United Kingdom’s The Sun newspaper published a report today following an exclusive interview Thursday in which President Donald Trump criticized Prime Minister Theresa May’s approach to Brexit and how it may impact trade with the U.S.

….

The president reportedly told The Sun he tried to offer advice on May’s negotiations, but she ignored it and has advanced her Chequers Plan:

“If they do a deal like that, we would be dealing with the European Union instead of dealing with the UK, so it will probably kill the deal. If they do that, then their trade deal with the U.S. will probably not be made.

“We have enough difficulty with the European Union. We are cracking down right now on the European Union because they have not treated the United States fairly on trading. No, if they do that, I would say that that would probably end a major trade relationship with the United States …

“I would have done it much differently. I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn’t agree, she didn’t listen to me. She wanted to go a different route. I would actually say that she probably went the opposite way. And that is fine. She should negotiate the best way she knows how, but it is too bad what is going on.”

The president said the Brexit deal now shaping up has taken “too long” to come to fruition and that alone makes it a “bad deal.” He said he would be willing to walk away from the negotiating table, adding that the deal the prime minister is striking is “much different” from what the British people voted for in 2016.

Still the president said he thinks May is a “very good person,” and personally likes her very much. While said he wasn’t putting one ahead of the other, asked specifically if former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson would make a good replacement for the prime minister, he said he did.
