The kingdom has threatened to build a nuclear waste dump literally at the border with its diminutive neighbor too.

King Salman has said Saudi Arabia would take military action to eliminate the Russian-made S-400 aerial defense system if it is installed in neighboring Qatar, which has reportedly entered into a deal to purchase several of the launch systems despite being home to a major U.S. Central Command base.

Accoring to Reuters, Salman “recently” wrote a letter to French President Emmanuel Macron that states, in part:

“The kingdom would be ready to take all necessary measures to eliminate this defense system, including military action.”

Saudi citizens are already banned from travelling to, residing in, or flying through Qatar. Diplomatic relations between the countries have been terminated since the former took Iran’s side in the regional conflict between the major Sunni and Shi’a Muslim countries.

The tiny Persian Gulf emirate is the second major Muslim-majority ally of the U.S. to turn to Russia for military equipment following Turkey’s decision to request the S-400 system last year. Yet it has been the home of the U.S. Central Command’s forward headquarters base, al-Udeid Air Base, since 2009.

Qatar has been the subject of a land, air, and sea blockade by Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies for nearly a year. The tiny emirate has been accused of funding Islamic terrorism, supporting extremists, and fostering stronger ties with Iran.

In April Riyadh announced it was considering plans to build a new industrial and economic hub that would situated on a new waterway that would run along the roughly 40-mile border between the two countries. The move would make Qatar an island, both figuratively and literally, crippling its economy that is dependent on facilitating oil shipments in and around the Persian Gulf.
