US Ambassador David Friedman opened the ceremony with the American anthem and a video message of congratulations from President Donald Trump declaring that every nation has the right to choose its capital, including Israel, and pledging friendship.
The gathering of 800 guests, included a large delegation of US administration officials and members of congress. President Trump’s son-in- law and senior adviser Jared Kushner delivered warm congratulations in his opening remarks. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu paid tribute to the president who made history by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin drew the curtain from the sign on the wall of the former consulate building: The United State embassy.
