The likelihood of war in the Middle East grew again Tuesday after the head of the Lebanese Army ordered his soldiers to “full combat readiness.”
Gen. Joseph Aoun ordered his soldiers to continue to cooperate with the United Nations forces in the country under Security Council Resolution 1701, but also told them to prepare for war on their southern border with Israel. The American-trained general also said:
“The army needs to be prepared to confront the threats and violations of the Israeli enemy and its hostile intentions against Lebanon.”
Earlier in the day, the country’s president, Michel Aoun had said:
“Lebanon has confronted Israeli aggressions from 1978 until 2006 and has been able to liberate its territories. Israeli targeting still continues and it is the right of the Lebanese to resist it and foil its plans by all available means.”
Aoun, who is Christian, is an ally of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah and is no friend of Israel or the U.S. The former military general still blames the U.S.—particularly President George H.W. Bush—for a 1989 invasion by Syria.
Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil has also warned Israel against “starting a war,” saying his country is “sure to win it.” For it’s part, Israel has stated it has no intention of invading Lebanon or attacking Hezbollah based there, but recently acknowledged it had forged secret diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia in opposition to Iran.
