A temporary fix was put into place for now to slow the leak
WASHINGTON STATE (INTELLIHUB) — A radiation radiation [sic] monitor was triggered Thursday morning sounding an alarm which resulted in 350 Hanford Plutonium Plant workers taking protective cover.
The alarm sounded about 7 a.m. local time after a release of nuclear contamination at the Plutonium Reclamation Facility that’s currently in the process of being demolished.
The Department of Energy’s official Hanford Site Facebook page posted the following statement shortly after the event: “Employees in the Plutonium Finishing Plant are taking cover inside the facility as a precaution after an air monitor (for contamination) outside the plant near demolition activities sounded this morning. There are no protective actions required for employees outside of the Plutonium Finishing Plant at this time. More information will be posted here as it becomes available.”
Workers managed to put a proverbial band-aid on the damaged section of the “glove box,” known to be a highly contaminated section of the plant, to temporarily bring radiation levels down while a plan can be put into place.
