China may be planning to build around 10 new bases for its future aircraft carriers, the state-owned Global Times newspaper reported on 20 April, amid speculation that the Asian country will operate at least six carriers in the coming years.
“In the long run, China needs to develop its own aircraft carrier battle teams, with at least six aircraft carriers, maritime forces led by guided missile destroyers, as well as attack submarines,” Xu Guangyu, a senior advisor to the China Arms Control and Disarmament Association, told the paper.
“These aircraft carriers will enable the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) to break through the first island chain [into the Western Pacific] to achieve command of the sea,” Xu added.
