China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has conducted its first live-fire exercise for its aircraft carrier battle group, the China Daily newspaper quoted the PLAN as saying in a statement.

Liaoning , the country’s first aircraft carrier, performed “various drills with several destroyers and frigates, involving scenarios such as reconnaissance, aircraft interception, sea strikes as well as missile defence”, the paper reported on 16 December.

The PLAN statement also quoted chiefs of the service’s training bureau as saying that the exercise, which took place in the Bohai Sea, was part of the carrier’s training schedule and aimed at verifying capabilities of personnel and weapons.
