US admiral announces F-22 deployment to Australia and warns of South China Sea confrontation

The United States will begin operating Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor multirole fighters from northern Australia in 2017, Admiral Harry Harris, commander of the US Pacific Command, said in Sydney on 14 December.

At the same time, he said that the United States is ready to confront China should it continue with what he described as its “aggressive” maritime claims in the South China Sea (SCS).

“I say loud and clear that I prefer co-operation so we can collectively address our shared security challenges,” Adm Harris said in a speech at the Lowy Institute think-tank.

“But I also say loud and clear that we will not allow a shared domain to be closed down unilaterally no matter how many bases are built on artificial islands in the South China Sea.
