ANGELA Merkel has said that Germany will stick with the “one China” policy in a brazen opposition to Donald Trump’s stance against the country.
The move could put her in conflict with the President-elect after he indicated that the super power could reconsider its long-held diplomatic stance of seeing Taiwan as part of China.
During a press conference with the Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, Ms Merkel said: “We still stand by a ‘one China’ policy and we will not change our stance.”
The statement came after she was asked directly whether she would be prepared to speak to Taiwan’s president.
The policy means only keeping unofficial relations with Taiwan.
Mr Trump said over the weekend that he would not feel “bound by a ‘one China’ policy”.
He told Fox News on Sunday: “I don’t know why we have to be bound by a ‘one China’ policy unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade.”
The Chinese government hit back, saying it was “seriously concerned” over the possibility the president-elect could drop a four-decade long understanding and try to strike a new “deal” with the administration.
