A ROYAL Navy patrol boat has fired three flares at a research vessel from Spain amid increasing tensions over the Rock.
Spanish oceanographers onboard research vessel Angeles Alvariño anchored in British waters as they attempted to drop a sonar buoy.
A Gibraltar Squadron speedboat was scrambled to stop them after radio contact failed.
Royal Navy ship the HMS Sabre then fired three warning flares, eventually forcing the research ship to leave.
Incidents such as this are becoming common in the Bay of Gibraltar and the Spanish government has been accused using scientists to make a political statement about their supposed claims to the territory.
Dr John Cortes, Gibraltar’s Minister for the Environment, tweeted: “It hurts to see scientists being forced/tricked into playing dangerous games, falsely in the name of science. There’s ways to do science.”
Meanwhile, a British government spokesman said: “The Royal Navy challenges all unlawful maritime incursions into British Gibraltar Territorial Waters (BGTW).”
