North Korea ‘CANNOT BE STOPPED’ from building nuclear weapons, intelligence chief warns

Replace “North Korea” with “Iran” throughout the article and it’ll probably be accurate soon, too.

THE US has no hope of stopping North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un from bolstering his devastating nuclear arsenal, a US national intelligence director has warned.

James Clapper has insisted the US should give up efforts to convince North Korean to abandon its nuclear weapons programme, claiming it is “probably a lost cause”.

During a speech at the Council of Foreign Relations in New York on Tuesday, Mr Clapper said the best result the US could hope for was for North Korea to halt its own development of nuclear weapons.

He said the hermit state was “paranoid”, adding: “I think the notion of getting the North Koreans to denuclearize is probably a lost cause.

“They are not going to do that – that is their ticket to survival.”

He said: “So the notion of giving up their nuclear capability, whatever it is, is a non-starter with them.”

Mr Clapper insisted that after a trip to Pyongyang in 2014 to secure the release of two American hostages, he gained an insight into how North Korea functions.

He said: “They are under siege and they are very paranoid, so the notion of giving up their nuclear capability, whatever it is, is a non-starter with them.

“The best we could probably hope for is some sort of a cap, but they are not going to do that just because we ask them. There’s going to have to be some significant inducements.”
