New US nuclear-capable cruise missile expected to proceed

A US Air Force (USAF) programme to develop and field a new nuclear-capable Long-Range Stand-Off (LRSO) cruise missile has undergone a Pentagon review and appears poised to proceed to development soon.

Pentagon acquisition executive Frank Kendall “is looking at what the acquisition strategy is, and is having a discussion right now – is there a cheaper way to do it?” Lieutenant General Jack Weinstein, USAF deputy chief of staff for strategic deterrence and nuclear integration, told a handful of reporters during a recent meeting. He said the remaining discussions are meant to ensure the acquisition strategy is as cost-effective as possible and “there was no question during the last meeting that we’re going to do an LRSO”.
