In a fiery speech on Wednesday, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan accused the US of responsibility for the bloodshed in Syria by not recognizing the Kurdish YPG militia as a terrorist organisation and called on the Obama administration ‘to decide’ whether it wants to be on the side of Turkey or on the side of ‘terrorist organizations.’
Erdogan added that despite the written proof in his possession that he presented to the Americans, they refuse to see the Kurds as terrorists. “Allies don’t tell each other my enemy’s enemy is my friend. You must have principles. But there are no principles here,” he said. Erdogan’s comments were in response to a statement by State Department spokesman John Kirby the previous day in which he praised the Kurds fighting ISIS and said his country does not view the YPG as a terrorist organization.
