Khamenei approves nuclear deal on the condition that it not be enforced

Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ordered the country’s nuclear deal with world powers to be implemented, but attached a list of conditions to his nod of approval.

Khamenei, who gave the green light for the deal in an Oct. 21 letter to President Hassan Rouhani, said all sanctions on Iran must be lifted and any new sanctions imposed by the United States would be a deal-breaker.

The Obama administration, however, has only agreed to lift sanctions on Iran that were not part of those imposed due to Teheran’s sponsorship of terrorist organizations. The U.S. has also said it would reimpose sanctions if Iran breaches the nuclear deal or the UN’s prohibition on Iran’s testing of ballistic missiles.

“Any comments suggesting the sanctions structure will remain in place or [new] sanctions will be imposed, at any level and under any pretext, would be a violation of the JCPOA,” Khamenei said in the letter to Rouhani, according to the state-controlled PressTV.
