The new cyber unit of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) was identified as Unit 78020 and is based in Kunming, in Yunnan Province, according to a report by security correspondent Bill Gertz and ThreatConnect.com.
“Unit 78020 conducts cyber espionage against Southeast Asian military, diplomatic, and economic targets,” the report said. Unit 78020 is part of “a broader national objective of physically intruding into the 1.4 million square miles that make up the South China Sea.”
