A satellite image suggests China is developing a new type of experimental unmanned aircraft that can travel at hypersonic speeds in Chengdu, the Sina Military Network based in Beijing reported on Sept. 22.

The images show an extremely short aircraft with two wings in contrast to other unmanned aerial vehicles that China has developed. The aircraft looks more similar to the X-15 hypersonic rocket-powered aircraft developed by North American Aviation for the United States Air Force and NASA back in 1959 than Lockheed Martin’s SR-72, designed to replace the SR-71 Blackbird, currently the world’s fastest jet.
