THESE staggering images show just how much Russia’s military presence has grown in Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s heartland.
Vladimir Putin’s Government is understood to be handing out new types of air and ground weapons to soldiers in the war-torn country, amid growing concerns of Moscow’s deepening support to Damascus.
Sources say Russia has set up an air traffic control tower and transported prefabricated housing units for up to 1,000 personnel to an airfield serving the Syrian port of Latakia.
A source said: “The weapons are highly effective and very accurate, and hit targets precisely.
“We can say they are all types of weapons, be it air or ground.”
Amid fears Russia is planning to expand its role in the country’s raging civil war, President Barack Obama met with King Salman of Saudi Arabia last Friday to repeat their demand that any lasting settlement in Syria would require an end to the Assad regime.
The images emerged as Putin gave his strongest admission yet that Russia was already providing some military and logistical support to Syria.
He said: “We are already giving Syria quite serious help with equipment and training soldiers, with our weapons.”
The United States, along with Saudi Arabia and Turkey, have supported insurgents battling to unseat Assad, whose foreign military backing has so far come mostly from Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah.
But as a US-led coalition targets Islamic State terrorists in Syria and Iraq, the prospects of a potential clash between the US and Russian air forces look ominous.
