Greek PM Alexis Tsipras pictured at G8 demonstration in 2001

Have you ever wondered why Tsipras is so close to Russia?

Images of Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras taking part in a demonstration at the G8 summit in Italy in 2001 have emerged.

Mr Tsipras was reportedly among a group of 1,000 Greek radicals who travelled to Italy with the aim of disrupting the G8 meeting in Genoa in 2001.

The images show Mr Tsipras, then 26, looking on as another demonstrator is restrained up by police in riot gear.

When the group was barred from Ancona, they staged an all-day protest which later became violent, resulting in hundreds of arrests and injuries.

Mr Tspiras was reportedly attracted to politics by his high-school sweetheart Peristera Batziana, now a computer engineer, who convinced him to join the Communist Party.

The pair now live in an apartment in a ramshackle block in a working-class area in Athens, rather than the prime minister’s official residence.
