Deputy prime minister boasts of powerful new armament for T-14 Armata, Russia’s new main battle tank

Russia’s new-generation main battle tank, the T-14 Armata, is to be fitted with a gun whose shell can “burn through a metre of steel”, a senior official has said.

The Armata was introduced with much fanfare on Saturday when it took part in a huge military parade on Red Square in Moscow to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

Dmitry Rogozin, Russia’s hawkish deputy prime minister with responsibility for the defence industry, said the tank would be given a 152mm gun.

“We have a shell for this tank that will burn through a metre of steel, we’re going to put it on the Armata,” he told the Izvestiya newspaper.

Russian state television said it would be the “most powerful cannon to be mounted on a main battle tank of any country ever”.

The Armata is to be the main battle tank of Russia’s ground forces, and 2,300 are expected to be produced for the army by 2020. It has a remotely-controlled turret with an automatic weapons loading system and an armoured capsule for the three-man crew.
