The United States plotted the coup, which took place in Ukraine in February 2014, in response to Russia’s policy in Syria, said George Friedman, the founder and CEO of Stratfor, known as “Shadow CIA”.
MOSCOW, December 19 (Sputnik) — The change of power in Ukraine was initiated by the United States in response to Russia’s stance on Syria, the head of Stratfor, a geopolitical intelligence firm, said in an interview to Kommersant published Friday.
“There [Syria] Russians demonstrated to the Americans that they were capable of influencing processes in the Middle East. But the US already has a lot of problems in that region, even without Russians… The US treated it as Russia’s attempt to harm them. Event in Ukraine should be considered in this very context,” George Friedman said, as quoted by the newspaper.
According to the head of Stratfor, also known as “Shadow CIA”, saying that the conflict in Syria was the reason for the crisis in Ukraine would be a stretch. However, it caused many in Washington to believe that the Russians were a problem, he noted.
US May Attempt to Build ‘Cordon Sanitaire’ Around Russia
The US may attempt to isolate Russia by creating an alliance including Poland, Romania, Turkey and the Baltic States, the head of Stratfor suggested.
“The US will have to make a strategic decision, not now, but in the future: either a heavier involvement in Ukraine… or a creation of a new alliance — within or outside NATO — including Poland, Romania, the Baltic States and, for example, Turkey. This is already happening, slowly, but nevertheless happening. It will be a ‘cordon sanitaire’, something Russia will not accept,” Friedman said, as quoted by the media outlet.
The head of Stratfor said that control over Ukraine by the United States is not important, what is important to the US is that Russia does not control Ukraine.
