During a press conference held in Beijing on Sept. 15, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, the defense minister of Ecuador, told the Madrid-based Agencia EFE that China and Ecuador had agreed to strengthen military cooperation.
Espinosa met Chang Wanquan, the Chinese defense minister, when she arrived in China on Sept. 15 to begin her five-day visit aimed at learning about the People’s Liberation Army. Chang stated the visit was also to deepen the cooperation and exchange between China and Ecuador. Espinosa also said that China is the most important economic and strategic trade partner Ecuador has at the moment.
Five agreements were signed regarding military cooperation, according to Espinosa. In addition, Ecuador launched a new program to allow the PLA to train its military personnel. This training program includes Chinese-language and martial arts classes given by Chinese instructors at Ecuador’s Armed Forces University.
