SANTA ANA, Calif. — The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will no longer detain inmates past their scheduled release dates in order to hold them for federal immigration authorities.

The department is joining law enforcement agencies across the country — including in Los Angeles, San Diego and Riverside — that are no longer holding inmates who are potentially deportable beyond the inmates’ jail terms.
The practice was deemed unconstitutional in a federal court ruling.
