Ukrainian armed forces launched a “special operation” against militiamen in the country’s Russian speaking east, authorities said, recapturing a military airfield from pro-Moscow separatists.
Gunfire could be heard from the airfield at the town of Kramatorsk after a fighter jet swooped low over the area. Ukrainian troops were seen disembarking from helicopters.
“We approached the airbase on foot, it was a very long walk,” says Roland Oliphant.
“We were stopped by a Ukranian servicemen with a rifle. He told us that they had defended their base from an attack, from an attempt to take it over, and that was about all he was prepared to tell us before he made it very clear that it was time for us to leave.”
